Is your town/hamlet/metropolis/island in Transition? Huh? A Transition initiative is a locally organised response to climate change and fossil fuel depletion. For the country mice around here, it’s Amersham in Transition, which asked Madomat to design the logo.

There are plenty of resources online for green issues. Yet the one we keep on coming back to is TreeHugger – mainly as no others seem to be quite as interesting (or as innovatively designed). It’s also about as far away from the typical green clichés as possible, and for this reason alone, long may it continue.

Lovely as a Tree is one of our favourite sites, ever. It is a fantastic resource for environmentally aware graphic design, with the perfect tone of voice: fresh, informative and not at all cutesy. We only wish that we’d done it. Oooh — the envy!

1% For The Planet

1% for the Planet

Through 1% for the Planet, more than 1200 companies worldwide donate 1% of their sales to environmental groups and organisations every year. We’re proud to be a member, donating half of 1% of our turnover to the Woodland Trust and the other half to the Centre for Alternative Technology. Since we merged with Grain Creative, our membership is now under that name.

The Woodland Trust

We’re lucky to have some of the most beautiful ancient woodlands in the world here in the UK. The Woodland Trust is concerned with making sure future generations can enjoy them as much we do, as well as developing new sites which benefit both communities and the environment. We have sponsored part of a wood two miles from our Buckinghamshire office and we are adding to the sponsored area every year.

Centre for Alternative Technology

By promoting and educating about sustainable technologies such as renewable energy and environmental building, the Centre for Alternative Technology is working hard to find practical solutions to the problems that are facing our planet — all the while showing that sustainability is not only easy to attain, but can also provide a better quality of life.

The Environment

Did you know that printing has the lowest take-up of environmental policies of any major industry? That the paper industry is the world’s fifth largest industrial consumer of energy? Or that the UK is the world’s third largest importer of illegal timber?

Things like this can make it seem like the design industry is lagging behind in its responsibility to the planet. However at Madomat, we’re proud to be making a difference – whether it’s by using recycled materials, keeping chemicals to a minimum and cutting waste, or by supporting organisations like 1% for the Planet.

Of course, it doesn’t stop there. We see each new project as a fresh opportunity to share our knowledge and experience with our clients — by educating and inspiring, we can achieve positive results that reach out far beyond the project brief.
